We are super stoked to announce that Southern California shredder, Chris Alzona, will now be repping Volume and Resist Fixed! Chris is a super talented trick rider hailing from the Oceanside area, and is one of the chillest dudes around on top of that. Check out some photos of his new Thrasher rig, and get to know him a little more in this quick interview. Keep an eye on Chris' Instagram for constant mind bogglers... @chris_wayoki
How old are you and where is your home town?
I'm 42 years young. Born and raised in San Diego, CA! I've been living in North County San Diego for the last 10 years, but I now reside in Oceanside.
What originally got you into riding, and who were some early influences on you?
My wife (GF at the time) got me my first fixed gear back in 2017 mainly to get me outside, and I had no intentions of learning how to do any tricks. Big BMX wheelie bikes were getting popular in my area right around that time, so I learned how to wheelie pretty much from the jump. It wasn't until the lockdown in 2020 that I really got serious about trick riding. This was also the time I started to work from home, so I would go outside and sesh on my lunch breaks. Some of my early influences would be my childhood homie Jeff Ubalde (taught me how to keo spin), Andy Sparks (literally learned all of my core tricks from his tutorials), JBALL, and of course Keo Curry (RIP). Andy Sparks is probably my biggest influence early on since he would rip sick ass combos at the end of his tutorials and I really wanted to link up tricks like he does.
So you never rode 20" BMX at all? It was straight to fixed?
I always had bikes growing up just to cruise around, but never got serious about riding until I started to ride fixed. I did have that short stint riding wheelie bikes, but once I got back on a fixed gear I never looked back.
How strong is the Oceanside/San Diego scene?
The non-trick fixed gear scene in San Diego is really good. We have a sick local velodrome, and the North American Cycle Courier Championships is being held in San Diego this year which is pretty dope. The trick track/FGFS scene however is really small. Literally just me and a couple homies holding it down here. Shout out FPA Crew!
I know you have a couple of different setups, but is there a certain one you prefer?
The bike I've been riding the most this year has been my Volume Cutter V7. I want to say that it's my favorite bike out of my collection. Love the whole look of the build and it feels dialed. The whole setup works great with my riding style. I did just build up a new Thrasher (See Pictures) that arguably looks even better than my Cutter and I'm really hyped to shred it!
Besides riding, what keeps you busy on the day to day?
If I'm not working, riding, or working on my bike, I'm hanging out with my wife, our daughter and our 3 cats. Outside of work and family life my free time is pretty limited. I only get to sesh on my lunch breaks, so that's why all of my clips are outside of my house in the middle of the day LOL. I've also been a car guy for my whole life, and have been wanting to get back into that at some point. Bikes have taken over all the free time (and money) I've had lately. Haha.
What does the future look like for Chris Alzona?
Riding wise, I want to keep progressing and unlocking new tricks and combos. I have so many ideas in my brain and not enough time in the day to ride. I've also been wanting to film a web edit, so hopefully I'll get that going sometime soon!
Anything else you'd like to add? Let's hear some shoutouts!
Wanted to give a thank you to Volume and Resist for putting me on flow! Super hyped to be repping one of the OG companies in fixed trick riding. Also big ups to all the homies in the Full Pedal Alchemists, and the No Panic SD Bike Life crews holding it down for the San Diego scene. Last but not least I wanted to thank JBALL and everyone at SMC for keeping the trick track and FGFS scene alive. Real stoked to be a part of an amazing community and to contribute to its progression!
